Parish Council spent quite some time on Tuesday night considering our objective “building a church of disciples”. We began by asking the question “what is the difference between being a member of a Rotary (or other service) Club and being part of the church. Our response lay in the fact that Rotary members kindly volunteer their spare time, energy and money while to belong to Jesus is to give up your life to him.

Jesus said “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for me will save it”.

So it is scarier to belong to Christ’s church, it seems to cost more. But, paradoxically, it is through death to self by serving Christ that we gain everything, including the gain of our true selves. It’s a bigger call for a bigger gain.

Rotary and other service clubs do a great job and society is better off for them. However, Christians are to be disciples of (not part time volunteers for) Jesus. This is a journey that we humbly walk with the help of God’s Spirit.
